Gynaecomastia- What it is and how it can be treated?

01 JUN 2022 By Admin

This is a condition wherein males have excessive growth of breast tissues which looks inappropriate as respect to age and sex. In simpler terms gynecomastia is abnormally developed breasts in male subjects.

Gynecomastia is a very common thing and mostly it is a benign thing with no further repercussions. Gynecomastia can be developmental in origin or may be secondary to some hormonal imbalance causing medications or disease.

Pubertal gynecomastia - it’s a prominent breast development in male subjects when they are approaching puberty. This can be symmetrical or most commonly asymmetrical. Boys will often complain about one side of their chest being developed more than the other.

Secondary gynecomastia is an entity in which breast development is secondary to some reason like hormonal imbalance, anabolic steroids, recreational drug use, HIV medications etc.

This type of gynecomastia may appear later in life when the actual precursor reason is present.

Pseudogynecomastia, one of the similar sounding names, what it actually means is increase in fat deposition without gland hypertrophy in men.

Mild presentations of gynecomastia which have underlying hormonal imbalance or the ones which are secondary to some particular drug use, can get reverted in early stages with medical treatment. For all the advanced presentations, surgery is the choice of treatment.
